Adrian Magson

Adrian Magson has published more than 400 stories and features in numerous magazines in the U.K., U.S. (including Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and Stars and Stripes), Japan, South Africa, Australia, and Scandinavia. He has written for BBC radio, and currently writes the “Beginners” and “New Author” pages for Writing Magazine, and writes reviews for Shots Magazine. His latest two novels that were released in 2010. Red Station, is the first in a spy series with Severn House Publishing; and Death on the Marais, is the first in a French cop series set in the 60s. Both books have been receiving some terrific reviews, including this from Booklist (American Library Association) on Red Station: “The nail-biting suspense, high-octane action, and keep ‘em guessing plot set this book apart from the usual spy thriller, but it’s smart, tough, fearless, quick-thinking superspook Harry Tate who puts it in a whole other league. Superb!”

Adrian’s stories have appeared in anthologies from EQMM, Best British Mysteries 2006, Crime Scenes (ed. David Stuart Davies), Sniplits, Criminal Tendencies, Cutting Edge, Bullet, ThugLit, and Best British Crime Stories Vol.7 2010. He also teaches creative writing classes.

Adrian’s first novel, No Peace for the Wicked, published in 2004, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Award. It was the first in his series featuring the young female investigative journalist, Riley Gavin, and the former Royal Military cop, Frank Palmer. It was followed by No Help for the Dying (2005), No Sleep for the Dead (2006), No Tears for the Lost (2007), and No Kiss for the Devil (2008). He is also author of the Young Adult ghost novel, The Lost Patrol, published by Gate Way Publishers.

Adrian lives in Oxfordshire, England with his wife, Ann. He has been writing fulltime for 13 years, and prior to that he was an international sales manager and martial arts instructor.

Q & A
What are you reading now?
Just started a debut novel by American writer Noah Boyd. It’s an FBI thriller said to be in the Lee Child (Jack Reacher) style. So far so good.

How does the reality of being a published author differ from the dream?
Funny thing is, it only really hits home when someone asks this very question. Otherwise, I don't really think about it (okay, when I go into a bookshop and see my books, THEN it hits home!) Thinking about it now...you find yourself doing talks, signings—all that, and it’s fantastic. No other word for it. How the culmination of a dream should be.

What was your first published work, and what did you do to celebrate?
It was a short story called Hole in One—a crime caper. I think I must have celebrated with a drink or two—but it was so long ago, I can’t remember!
