Cynthia Becker

Cynthia Becker is the award-winning author of two biographies and six non-fiction works on contemporary topics. Her essays and feature articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Saturday Evening Post, Denver Post, Colorado Country Life, Family Chronicle, and Learning Through History.

Cynthia’s first book, Chipeta: Queen of the Utes, co-authored by P. David Smith and published by Western Reflections Publishing, earned the 2003 EVVY Award for Best Biography. She also told Chipeta’s story for a middle grade audience in Chipeta: Ute Peacemaker, published by Filter Press in 2008. It received the 2009 WILLA Finalist Award in Children’s/YA Literature. Cynthia has also produced library-market books for educational publisher Thomson Gale.

After establishing herself as a non-fiction author, Cynthia began to explore fiction. Her short story A Night At The Theater, won the 2009 Laura Award from Women Writing the West and is scheduled for publication in an online anthology. Her story Working Girl placed third in the same competition in 2008. Her interest in biography and history shows in these two works based on real people, places and events.

Cynthia continues to write short stories while working on a new biography and an historical novel (both for middle grade readers). She blogs every Monday morning at Chipeta: Ute Peacemaker, with a focus on research, writing and history.

Q & A

Who most influenced your writing process, style, or technique?

My mother taught me how to bring life to a story. She entertained me with tales from her childhood and events in the lives of family members. Her facility with description brought to life people I never knew and places I had never been. Today, I can visualize characters and hear their voices. My husband, an experienced essayist and news writer, influenced my writing style. With a red pen, he exorcised adverbs and every bit of passive language from my early drafts. He pushed me to revise, revise and revise again.
