Q & A
How does the reality of being a published author differ from the dream?

It's a lot harder, this business of writing, than it seems from the outside because it's so much more than just the writing. It's a business, and you have to treat it as such: keep stories out and keep writing. But business or not, it's still a huge thrill to see an acceptance, even after many stories published. Good reviews make me happy, not-so-good reviews can still cut. And over time, I've learned not to take things personally, and writing is increasingly less a dream that can be destroyed--the more I sell and work at this, the more solid being a writer becomes.

What are you reading now?

I just finished Joshua Ferris's Then We Came to the End. Fabulous book both in terms of being an engaging (funny and moving) story for the reader in me, but also having an extraordinarily interesting POV for the writer in me.
