I always like the late J. D. Salinger's comment in the novel, Franny and Zooey, when Buddy (the aspiring Glass family author) asks his older brother, Seymour, the same question. "Mixing memory with desire," is what he told him that writing was. I suppose that's how I use my memory. I create the longing and desire in my stories based on my memory and that miraculous memory contained in the World Wide Web.
What was your first published work, and what did you do to celebrate it?
My first book was a non-fiction title, The Digital Scribe: A Writer's Guide to Electronic Media. Harcourt-Brace's imprint, AP Professional Press published it, and I celebrated the publication by taking our best friends out for dinner.
As a fellow Sniplits author, I wonder if you prefer writing short stories over other types of writing. Always interested in a published writer's opinion. Thanks,Tom Anselm
I do enjoy writing short stories because they give one an "immediate gratification," and I've always been one to enjoy the immediacy of short fiction. In addition, our society has become so "busy" that readers often only have time for the short piece rather than the longer, perhaps more complicated novel. Thanks for asking!
