Michael Bracken is the award-winning author of fiction, non-fiction and advertising copy. He is the author of 11 books and more than 1,000 shorter works published in more than 150 publications, worldwide. Although best known for writing crime fiction, Michael has published work in many genres. He’s won a number of awards, including a Derringer Award for his short story All My Yesterdays. His short story Dreams Unborn was named one of the year’s best by the editors of The Best American Mystery Stories 2005.
Michael is often called on to speak about writing, editing, and publishing to audiences across the U.S. He has taught non-credit writing classes at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and guest lectured at various universities, including Baylor University.
Michael served as vice president of the Private Eye Writers of America, served three terms as vice president of the Mystery Writers of America’s Southwest Chapter, and has served as chair of the Best First Novel committee for the Private Eye Writers of America’s Shamus Awards. He is also an active member of the Horror Writers Association and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Michael has also held many elected positions in the Waco Advertising Federation, a chapter of the American Advertising Federation, including president. Michael received his Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing from Baylor University.
Q & A
MB: I don't know if I prefer writing short stories to other forms of writing, but I've had a great deal of success with them. At last count I'd sold more than 800 short stories in various genres. I also enjoy writing personal essays, and have had several published. I've also written five novels - four published, one making the rounds - and gobs of advertising, public relations and business communications material, but none of this was quite as enjoyable as the short stories and personal essays.
