What did I think of lesbian serial killers? There wasn't a lot to say to that one.
How did it feel the first time you heard someone else read one of your stories? Did you discover anything about your story that surprised you in the reader's interpretation - and was that a good or a distressing thing?
Some of my stories were used for critical analysis at a NY state college. One student saw a lot of religion in one of the pieces and believed I was a lapsed Catholic. None of it was right, but it did make me sound very deep.
Q: Has a review of your work ever changed your own perception of your work?
I wrote a dark story about a woman's obession with weight loss. The character was so desperate that she faked medical complaints to have internal organs and limbs removed. A reader wrote to me telling me she was a recovering anorexic. She said she was touched by the story and felt it rang true. She admitted that she had weighed her limbs and contemplated amputation. It taught me stories had power and fiction can never outbeat fact.
