Q & A
TW: I love all forms of mystery/suspense/thriller writing. However, for me, there is something especially attractive about writing short stories. They allow me to polish, polish, and then polish again, producing the best writing I am capable of. I can experiment with different protagonists and even different sub-genres (e.g. traditional mystery, PI stories, thrillers, crime stories). I have had greater luck in placing short stories than novels. However, compensation is minimal. I also love to write novellas. These are arguably the most difficult to place. The problem is the story idea usually determines the length. If I have a compelling idea, I write it to the length the story demands. Then I wrestle with the difficult job of placing it. Some short stories are what I call "accordion stories." They can be adjusted to any length between, say, 2500 and 5000 words. Others simply won't work give or take 500 words. I hope this helps.
